Sun-Stones (Zal’Kor) Copy link

A Sun-Stone, known in Rhun as a Zal’Kor (Zal = Sun, Kor = Core/Heart), is a radiant celestial crystal infused with the burning essence of Zaltar’s divine energy. These stones are not mined but harvested, forming naturally beneath the sun-scorched sands of Rhuna’s desert expanses, where the raw heat of the heavens condenses into solidified solar power.

When first unearthed, a Sun-Stone is volatile beyond measure, radiating waves of searing light and kinetic force that make it as destructive as it is magnificent. Unstabilized, such a stone can annihilate entire caravans simply by proximity. To render them safe, the Ezhani, masters of the Gem-Realms, transport the stones to the rivers of Ulden, submerging them in the subterranean currents where water cools and tempers their fury over time.

Once stabilized, a Zal’Kor glows with a deep amber-gold light, its surface veined with threads of liquid fire, pulsing like a living heartbeat. These refined Sun-Stones become the lifeblood of Rhuna’s greatest wonders: powering Gahlian Sun-Ships, illuminating floating city-beacons, and fueling Threaded weapons capable of unleashing controlled bursts of solar might. The most potent Zal’Kor are said to never burn out, cycling light eternally. Yet, even in their refined state, they remain dangerous; if fractured, a Sun-Stone releases a cataclysmic explosion of pure, unfiltered radiance—capable of incinerating fleets or rending the Threads of existence themselves. To wield a Zal’Kor is to hold a fragment of the sun: creation and destruction entwined.

Origins: The Zaltar’s Gift to the Ezhani Copy link

Sun-Stones are revered as divine relics, gifts from Zaltar, the astral flame of the southeastern Zaltanye shores. Legends claim that Zaltar’s fiery descent, which eradicated the Uthuru and reshaped Corvia’s swamplands, left behind these crystallized fragments of celestial light. The Ezhani became their stewards, developing the Sun-Stone Cycle: a sacred system of energy management that marries practicality with devotion.

Through this cycle, Sun-Stones are charged, dropped, retrieved, and distributed, ensuring that their energy sustains the subterranean gem-waterways of Ulden. For the Ezhani, this process is not mere labor—it is a divine duty, a reflection of cosmic balance between fire and water, sky and sea.

Charging in the Sky – The Flight of the Ezhani Copy link

Not all Sun-Stones are equal; the Elders of the Chorus select only those free of cracks or dangerous imperfections. Weakened stones cannot endure multiple cycles. The chosen stones are entrusted to Skybearers, the strongest of the Ezhani, who ascend beyond the clouds into the purest light. There, carried by Ulden’s storm-drafts, they perform the Thread-Song of Harmony, a sacred yellow-thread melody that aligns the stones with the sun’s essence. Suspended in the upper atmosphere, the stones burn white-hot, absorbing condensed solar energy until they nearly liquefy with stored power.

At peak charge, the Skybearers release the stones, letting them plummet toward Ulden’s riverways far below. Their descent blazes a fiery arc across the sky, known as the Skybrand, a visible symbol of renewal seen across the southern horizon. When the stones strike the subterranean waters, they explode in steam, filling the caverns with mist—a fog the Ezhani use to navigate the hidden depths. The rivers carry the stones downward to the coldest reaches of the undersea, where time and water cool their fury.

When the Zal’Kor have tempered in the ocean’s deep, the Depthbearers—Ezhani of unmatched endurance—dive like blazing phoenixes into the abyss. Shielded by thread-song barriers, they brave crushing pressure and freezing dark to retrieve the reborn stones. This act, called the Starfall Descent, is a sacred trial of strength, courage, and sacrifice. Depthbearers are honored among their kin, for they ensure that the cycle continues.

Once returned to Ulden, the cooled Sun-Stones are distributed throughout Rhuna. They illuminate underground settlements, provide clean and boundless energy for trade and industry, and are refined into Sun-Gems for Yellow Threaders, amplifying their Harmony-based weavings. In war, Zal’Kor power weapons and radiant shields wielded by Zaltar’s chosen warriors, blinding enemies with searing light or immolating corruption in bursts of divine fire.

Sacred Significance: The Balance of Forces Copy link

To the Ezhani, the Sun-Stone Cycle is more than a technological process—it is a song of existence. Each phase reflects the cosmic triad:

• The Ascent (Order) – Rising toward Zal’s light, gathering purity and potential.

• The Fall (Chaos) – Plummeting into transformation, violent but necessary.

• The Retrieval (Balance) – Reclaiming what was lost, sustaining life through harmony.

The Zal’Kor embodies creation through sacrifice, power through discipline, and renewal through balance. For the Ezhani, to tend the Sun-Stones is to tend the world itself, ensuring that the heart of Rhuna continues to burn, forever alive.
