The Veil of Severance – Rhuna’s Divine-Barrier Copy link

The Veil of Severance, known simply as the Veil, is a living, metaphysical barrier around Rhuna. It rises as Vel’s buried influence twists the sleeping mind of Rhun, severing the world from direct divine influence. It stands as both salvation and curse: a shield against divine devastation, and a prison within which Vel’s lingering Heart continues to fester.

To the people of Rhuna, the Veil is the reason their world endures. To Vel, it is the perfect womb—his living-stem system quietly spreading through Rhuna’s foundation, feeding on the very Balance meant to contain him.

The Earlier Wound – The Falling of the Black StarCopy link

During the Great Galactic War, Zal and the celestial hosts shattered Vel. Her Life-Flame Blade tore his form apart, but his destruction was not absolute. His Heart, carrying the three Seed-Stones, fell into Rhuna. This preceded Kar’s awakening, Xantyr’s birth, the Astraleth’s work with the Threads, and their later War of the Severed Threads.

The Heart embedded itself beneath Rhuna’s surface. Its tendrils entangled Rhunatha, the exposed mind of Rhun, spreading corruption through the wounded world. The buried Heart and Seed-Stones became the hidden foundation of later events; they were not the result of the Astraleth’s war.

The impact awakened Kar, whose lunar essence carried traces of both Rhun and Vel. Later, as Vel’s influence twisted Rhun’s sleeping mind and the Astraleth began shaping the world, the Veil rose above Rhuna and alarmed the heavens. The barrier concealed and contained the wound without removing the corruption beneath it.

The Veil’s Purpose – A Shield Forged in Sacrifice Copy link

The Veil was not designed as a simple wall; it was Rhun’s desperate act to preserve a world already infected. It had to achieve three aims:

• Seal Vel’s Heart within the planet, preventing the Universe-Seeds from spreading uncontrolled chaos through the cosmos.

• Deny the Astraleth and Prime Deities from entering Rhuna, sparing it from becoming another battlefield of gods.

• Grant Mortals Primacy, ensuring that survival and Balance would be fought for by living hands, not dictated by immortal wills.

Rhunatha remains the living mind and nerve system of Rhun, already entangled with Vel’s tendrils. Its roots anchor the Veil to the world; the barrier does not create Rhunatha anew.

The Veil’s Structure – Layers of Isolation and Containment Copy link

The Veil is a threefold construct of living Balance, woven through Rhunatha and anchored against Vel’s encroachment:

The Outer Veil – The Blinding Horizon Copy link

This outermost layer shrouds Rhuna from divine sight, casting it as a shifting mirage in the firmament. From beyond, even the most powerful deities cannot see Rhuna clearly unless called by mortal invocation. What glimpses they receive are filtered through Rhun’s will—fragmented visions, distorted omens, reflections that conceal as much as they reveal.

The Inner Veil – The Silencing Weave Copy link

This middle layer denies divine presence its full potency. Any god who dares cross into Rhuna finds their essence stripped, their immortal form reduced to mortality. It ensures that no deity can dictate Rhuna’s fate directly. It is also here that the first cracks have appeared over the ages—subtle weaknesses exploited by Threaders, Valanarks, and Tangled Bloods to channel forbidden power through.

The Core Lock – The Abyssal Chain Copy link

The deepest layer binds Vel’s Heart itself. Interwoven with the Blackened Rootbed, it locks the chaotic Universe-Seeds at the planet’s core. But this layer is not a simple prison—it is also Vel’s greatest shield. To unravel the Core Lock is to unravel the entire Veil, exposing Rhuna to divine war once more. Worse, Vel’s living-stem system has learned to feed on the Core Lock’s energy, entangling itself with Rhunatha’s roots. Each cycle, his influence seeps further upward.

Vel’s Manipulation – Chaos Beneath the Shield Copy link

Though trapped, Vel’s Heart is far from dormant. Over millennia, its black roots have spread through the underworld, twisting landscapes into Witherlands and creating anomalies where reality frays. It manipulates the Veil itself, using it as camouflage—masking his influence from the Astrals and allowing him to grow in silence.

To mortals, the Veil is a gift; to Vel, it is an incubator. His corruption now threads through Rhunatha’s network, threatening to one day choke the White Tree and drag the planet into eternal imbalance.

Cracks in the Barrier – When the Veil Falters Copy link

Despite its divine strength, the Veil is not impervious:

• Celestial Eclipses: When Kar aligns with Rhuna, the Veil thins. These rare moments allow bursts of divine power, uncontrolled surges of Thread energy, and sometimes, whispers from Vel himself.

• Divine-Blooded Conduits: Mortals such as Tangled Bloods and Valanarks can bridge the barrier, channeling gods or chaos alike. Some see this as a blessing; others, as a curse waiting to consume them.

• Thread-Weaving Subversion: Certain Master Threaders can manipulate the Veil’s patterns, opening sanctuaries of divine law, masking mortals as deities, or uncovering hidden Abyssal Gateways that lead directly to Vel’s Heart.

The Cost of Balance – A Shield and a Trap Copy link

The Veil is the reason Rhuna has endured for countless ages. It has kept divine war at bay, preserved mortal agency, and contained Vel’s catastrophic Heart. Yet its very existence ensures that Vel’s corruption remains untouchable. Every age brings his roots closer to Rhunatha’s core, and every eclipse risks letting his influence slip further into the world above.

To the Rhunai, the Veil is sacred—a trust to maintain for the survival of all life. To the Valanarks, it is a duty—a compromise that demands eternal vigilance. To Xantyr, Fate incarnate, and the cults of the Wither, it is an opportunity—a lock to be broken, a promise of power waiting in the dark.

The Veil of Severance is Balance’s greatest paradox: forged to save Rhuna, yet doomed to one day decide whether the world remains whole… or unravels into Vel’s final victory.
