The Origin of the Threads Copy link
The Threads were not created by the Astraleth.
They were discovered.
Long before mortals walked Rhuna, before the first kingdoms rose and before the War of Severed Threads scarred the world, the destruction of Vel left wounds throughout creation. Three Seed-Stones—collapsed remnants of realities consumed by the Devouring Storm—were carried into Rhuna with the buried Heart of Chaos.
Deep beneath the world, Vel’s remains became entangled with Rhun itself.
The Rhunai were among the first to awaken in response. They emerged as guardians of Balance and began the impossible work of containing the influence spreading from the buried Heart. They did not destroy what had taken root beneath Rhuna. They unraveled it, redirected it, and sought harmony where Chaos had begun to spread.
From those depths emerged five Ether Flames.
They were not Threads themselves.
They were conduits.
Through them, the unfinished forces buried beneath Rhuna could pass into the living world.
For ages, the Ether Flames remained untouched.
Then Xantyr found them.
The Temptation of Possibility Copy link
The Astraleth—Gahl, Kalthi, Ezhan, and Pahr—had been entrusted with shaping Rhuna.
They could move stone, raise mountains, guide rivers, nurture beasts, and transform landscapes through divine will. Yet there were limits to what they could accomplish.
Rhuna could be shaped.
But it could not truly change.
Xantyr showed them another possibility.
Through the Ether Flames, he taught the Astraleth how to reach deeper into the forces beneath creation. What they encountered there were not simple elements or obedient sources of power.
They found living possibilities.
They pulled.
Gahl drew Dalo and Cora.
Pahr drew Jatu.
Ezhan drew Sere.
Kalthi drew Nari.
And for the first time, the Threads entered the world in forms that could be touched by living creation.
The First Pulls Copy link
At first, the results seemed miraculous.
Dalo brought flame, force, touch, and dominion.
Cora brought endurance, hunger, adaptation, and survival.
Jatu opened sight toward memory, guidance, dreams, and uncertain futures.
Sere carried harmony through sound, stone, water, and resonance.
Nari filled the world with growth, fertility, scent, and abundance.
Rhuna came alive in ways the Astraleth had never imagined.
Forests rose where none had stood.
Tundras spread beneath newborn cold.
Caverns sang.
Deserts remembered dreams.
Grasslands erupted into impossible life.
The Astraleth believed they had discovered the missing language of creation.
They were only partly correct.
The Price of Pulling Copy link
The Ether Flames were never isolated from the wounds beneath Rhuna.
Every Pull reached downward.
Every act of creation placed greater strain upon the world.
The Astraleth drew more deeply, seeking greater wonders, greater understanding, and eventually the power to create lives capable of existing beyond divine command.
As they did, the Threads attached themselves more firmly to Rhuna.
Reality began to change too quickly.
Living things adapted within generations.
Landscapes responded to emotion, memory, and divine influence.
Time became unreliable.
Growth became suffocating.
Harmony became destructive resonance.
Adaptation became mutation.
And through the same pathways the Astraleth had opened, Vel’s lingering influence began to rise.
The Threads had become bridges.
Creation could pass through them.
So could corruption.
The War of Severed Threads Copy link
The Astraleth did not retreat.
They pulled harder.
Ambition became obsession. Rivalries deepened. Each believed their vision of the world could correct what the others had made.
The resulting conflict became the War of Severed Threads.
Entire regions were transformed.
The Halderin rose from fire, stone, ice, and buried divine power.
The Vahlwood grew from the collision of conquest and abundance.
The Slated Plains were scarred into dark glass.
Demuria slipped partially beyond ordinary time.
The world the Astraleth had hoped to perfect became permanently altered by their struggle.
And the Astraleth themselves were altered most of all.
Xantyr turned the stolen Life-Webs against the Astraleth, exploiting the devastation of their war. His trap fractured them into countless mortal lives rather than allowing them to return to wholeness.
They shattered.
From their fragments came the first Vathians.
The Threads remained.
What the Threads Are Now Copy link
The Threads are no longer foreign to Rhuna.
Too much of the world has grown around them.
Mountains, forests, creatures, cultures, senses, memories, and even bloodlines have been shaped by their presence. Removing them would not restore some forgotten natural state.
It would tear apart the world that now exists.
This is why the Threads are neither inherently sacred nor inherently corrupt.
They are consequences.
They are the living connection between Rhuna’s wounded past and its unfinished future.
Those who Pull upon them today do not reach into some distant reservoir of power.
They enter a relationship already thousands of years old.
And every Thread still remembers the first hands that pulled it.
