In this section

Long before the portal catastrophe, corruption from Vel’s buried Heart seeped into Rhuna. Where Threads tangled and the world’s wounded patterns failed, isolated Wither pockets formed. The portal catastrophe did not begin that corruption; the destruction of countless arrivals fed it on a new scale, turning scattered wounds into the great Witherlands. Long after Vel’s fall, his hunger endures. It lies not in flame or flood—but in the unseen decay that spreads like rot through the foundations of Rhuna itself. This corruption is The Wither, a slow unraveling of reality seeded into the very Threads that bind the world. It seeps through the scars of betrayal, spreads from lands soaked in sacrifice, and pulses in the hollow spaces where hope has faded. The Wither is not merely death—it is unmaking: the nullification of identity, purpose, and form. It bends the laws of creation, silences the music of the Threads, and reclaims all things into formless entropy. From this blight rise the Veldraken, chaos-born monstrosities who twist the Weave around them into nightmares. Witherwurms tunnel through the land like veins of ruin, sensing the fragile pulse of life and devouring it whole. At the center of this festering dark, behind ten ancient seals, slumbers Xal’Zhira, the Supreme Veldraken—Vel’s unfinished vengeance made manifest. But she is not forgotten. Across Rhuna, her cults rise, her name is whispered, and her heralds walk once more. The Wither is patient. It does not rage. It does not bargain. It waits—until the last light fades and everything collapses into the silence of never. This section will delve into the nature of the Wither, its monstrous offspring, its growing cults, and the desperate, sacred resistance of those who still fight to keep reality from being unwound.

Veldraken are monstrous, chaotic entities born from the cosmic force of unmaking. These creatures are spawned by intense acts of betrayal, sacrifice, or destruction, where the very essence of life and reality unravels, giving birth to their dark forms. The Veldraken embody the destructive will of Vel, the Deity of Chaos, and are agents of decay that leave nothing but ruin in their wake. They are not simply beings of destruction; they are manifestations of fear, rage, and the unraveling of existence. Wherever they roam, they twist the Threads of life, turning the world into a barren wasteland. Each Veldraken is unique, reflecting the nature of the conflict that birthed it, but all share the same core essence of corruption and decay. As the spawn of Xal'Zhira, the Supreme Veldraken, they are echoes of her unrelenting power, lesser in strength but still capable of bringing devastation to entire realms.

Xal'Zhira’s essence is one of uncontrollable terror , capable of distorting reality itself, and her very name strikes fear into the hearts of those who know of her power. Wither · book illustration

The Witherwurms are colossal, blind, thread-sensing creatures born from the chaotic pulsations of Vel's Heart deep in its core. These creatures embody the destructive force of Wither, feeding on life and the Threads to restore Vel to his original power. With an innate ability to sense disturbances in the Weave, the Witherwurms relentlessly hunt for nourishment, leaving devastation and decay in their wake. They are blind, but their connection to the Threads allows them to sense vibrations in the environment, making them relentless predators that feed on everything in their path, causing entire regions to wither and die. Their primary goal is to consume and corrupt, growing stronger with every feast they take.

How the Irenuk Keep the Witherwurms at Bay

The Irenuk tribes—comprising the Okkri, Xirvani, Ver'thak, Maru-Kai, and Ithaka—work in concert to keep the Witherwurms away from major cities and vital lands. The tribes use a combination of rituals, talisman crafting, sound-weaving, poisonous traps, and spirit-guided protections to create barriers that confuse and repel the Witherwurms. They carve sacred symbols into the land, set fire barriers, summon protective beasts, and create sonic disturbances to disrupt the Witherwurms' ability to track and feed. The Mirage Striders also use sand-carvings to misdirect the creatures, while the Xirvani employ harmonic frequencies to create protective zones. The tribes also collaborate on Blood Hunts, where skilled hunters track and eliminate Witherwurms, ensuring the creatures do not spread their corruption. These efforts, rooted in the Irenuk’s deep connection to nature and the Threads, provide a crucial defense against the Witherwurms' chaos and keep them from threatening Rhuna's cities and settlements.

The Chosen Copy link

The Chosen are a secretive and fanatical faction that seeks to awaken Xal'Zhira, the Supreme Veldraken, believing that she holds the key to reshaping Rhuna and ending the rule of fate itself. Driven by a profound belief in the purification of the world through unmaking, they view Xal'Zhira not as a monster, but as the true force that will restore balance by destroying the current order. The Chosen worship the Wither, seeing it as the purest form of existence, free from constraints.

Their goals are sinister yet deeply rooted in their conviction: they aim to find and break the seals that keep Xal'Zhira imprisoned, drawing closer to her essence with each act of destruction and betrayal. Through these rituals, they believe they will call forth the Supreme Veldraken, initiating a new era where only chaos and freedom exist.

The Chosen are divided into various sects and clans, each led by a high-ranking leader known as the Dark Herald, and they count among their ranks the Withered, warriors who willingly embrace the Wither to gain powers of unmaking, and the Sable Weavers, rogue Threaders who twist the Threads of reality in Xal'Zhira's name. Despite their small numbers, they are insidious, working from the shadows, infiltrating powerful institutions like the Rhunai Council and the Valanarks to subtly sow chaos and destabilize the world.

Their presence is felt in the undercurrents of unrest across Rhuna, manipulating the balance of power with each secret sacrifice they make, each betrayal they incite. The Chosen believe that true freedom can only be found through the destruction of all that came before, and they are prepared to sacrifice everything to bring Xal'Zhira back into the world.

Dark Herald Copy link

The Dark Herald is the ultimate leader of the Chosen, a figure of absolute power and unrelenting devotion to Xal'Zhira, the Supreme Veldraken. They embody the essence of chaos and decay, acting as both a harbinger of unmaking and the wrath of the Wither. As the figurehead of the Chosen, the Dark Herald is not just a general, but a living embodiment of destruction—a being tethered to the forces of decay, whose purpose is to guide the faction toward the resurrection of Xal'Zhira and the eventual collapse of all that is.

Appearance:

The Dark Herald's appearance is a terrifying manifestation of chaos and decay, designed to invoke fear and command respect. Their body is encased in blackened armor that seems to absorb the light around them, giving them an almost ethereal, ghostly presence. The armor appears cracked, as though it has been weathered by the passage of time and the destructive forces of the Wither. Spikes and barbed edges protrude from various parts of the armor, resembling the sharp, twisted branches of a dead tree, symbolizing the Herald's deep connection to the forces of decay.

Their helmet is shaped like a visage of death, a smooth, featureless face with sharp, glowing eyes of an unnatural green or purple, glowing with the light of chaos and corruption. The helmet’s design is both elegant and terrifying, with a high, tapered crown that suggests their noble and dark reign. Chains wrap around their body, links rusted and broken, but they hold firm, a symbol of their role as the one who will break the chains of fate and usher in destruction.

The Dark Herald’s cloak is tattered, flowing behind them like a shadow, the fabric appearing like burned, fraying threads that are on the verge of unraveling completely. It exudes an air of withering—as though everything it touches decays. The cloak is embroidered with symbols of chaos, and runes of unmaking, faintly glowing as if the very forces of decay are at work within the Herald’s presence.

Weapons:

Arthaqa, Scythe of the Unraveled:

The Dark Herald wields Arthaqa, a scythe forged from the heart of the Wither, with a long, jagged blade that is capable of unraveling the threads of life. The weapon is a symbol of their dark power, a scythe that does not simply reap lives, but uncouples fate itself. The blade’s edge is jagged, constantly rippling with dark energy that causes time itself to bend around it. The long handle of the scythe is made of dark, writhing metal, which seems to pulse with the presence of unseen forces, connecting the Herald to the chaos they wield.

The scythe’s blade is capable of cutting through anything—flesh, bone, and even the very weave of existence. Each strike it makes rips apart reality in a wide arc, the torn fabric of fate unraveling in its wake. Those struck by the blade do not merely die; they are unmade, their existence erased, leaving behind only empty, decaying husks.

Nithraxx, the Cursed Blade of Withering:

The Dark Herald also carries Nithraxx, a twisted sword forged from the Withered remains of an ancient realm consumed by Xal'Zhira's forces. The blade itself is a deep, dark obsidian, engraved with runes of destruction that glow faintly as it cuts through the air. The sword is cursed, with each slash not only cutting through flesh but also ripping apart the soul, causing those struck to experience a slow, agonizing decay. The blade seems to absorb life, and with each swing, it drains the vitality of its victim, leaving them hollowed out and consumed by the Wither.

Nithraxx’s power is especially potent when used against those who attempt to resist chaos. It binds the victim to the Herald’s will, leaving them weakened and eventually broken, their will slowly eroded until they become nothing more than a puppet of the Wither.

Armor:

The Dark Herald's armor is forged from the remnants of destroyed worlds and unmade realities. Its base material is a dark, decaying metal that seems to change and shift, as though it is not a solid substance but rather a fusion of chaos and destruction. The armor has an organic feel, almost as though it was grown rather than forged, with tendrils of darkness weaving throughout it. The shoulder pads are raised high and sharp, resembling blackened, jagged thorns, and the chest plate is embossed with symbols of ruin, representing the Herald’s role in ensuring the unraveling of the world.

The gauntlets and boots of the Herald are covered in barbed, thorn-like projections, ready to tear into anyone who dares to come too close. These are not just for protection, but also serve as tools of destruction—blades that can pierce through armor and defenses, while also draining the life of anyone who makes contact.

Withered Copy link

The Dark Herald is accompanied by the Withered, a terrifying force of undead warriors who have been consumed by the Wither and risen again to serve the Herald. These once-living beings are twisted into half-dead, decaying forms, their bodies rotting and partially consumed by the Wither, yet they still function with an eerie purpose. They wear their decay like armor, their limbs fused with necrotic energy, making them resistant to normal attacks.

The Withered are undead soldiers that obey the Herald's commands without question. They are used as shock troops, battle fodder, or to carry out dark rituals in service to their master. Their mere presence on the battlefield is a sign of the Wither’s spread, and wherever they march, life itself starts to wither and fade. Their touch is enough to turn living beings into rotting husks, their very essence consumed by the energy that drives them.

Sable Weavers Copy link

The Sable Weavers, also known as the dark-threaders, are rogue Threaders within the Chosen, skilled in manipulating the very fabric of reality for the purpose of chaos and unmaking. Unlike traditional Threaders, who maintain the natural balance of the Threads, the Sable Weavers twist and corrupt the Threads, using their abilities to unravel fate and reality itself. They are adept at manipulating the weave of existence, distorting time, warping fate, and decaying the very fabric of life. Their craft is one of darkness, where the rules of the universe can be bent, broken, and completely rewritten according to the will of Xal'Zhira.

Sable Weavers are known for their subtlety and cunning, operating from the shadows to sow discord, doubt, and destruction. They often serve as agents of corruption, infiltrating institutions and manipulating key events to weaken the structures of society and pave the way for Xal'Zhira's return. Their presence is always marked by an eerie distortion of reality, as they warp the Threads of fate, making people question their own choices, memories, and the very flow of time.

Dressed in dark, shifting robes that appear to be made from the very shadowed Threads they weave, the Sable Weavers strike fear into all who encounter them, as they are the unseen hands behind the unraveling of destinies. Their eyes glow with the knowledge of things better left unknown, and their very touch can cause the slow decay of the world around them. They are the dark architects of chaos, the weavers who tie the universe's unraveling into a tangled web of destruction.
