The Nature of the Rhunai Copy link

The Rhunai are the Astralkin of Rhun, born from the stone-seed cocoons embedded in the roots of Rhunatha, the Great Tree of Balance. They are not mortals, nor are they wholly divine—they exist in the in-between, embodiments of the cosmic principle of equilibrium. Where the Zaltar purge with flame and the Veldraken unravel with hunger, the Rhunai neither burn nor consume. They listen, guide, and weave, standing as mediators of fate itself.

Awakened after Vel’s arrival, when chaos threatened to consume the planet, the Rhunai emerged to dismantle Vel’s corrupted paradises, restore the Pure Threads, and prevent either Order or Chaos from tilting Rhuna into collapse. Each Rhunai is bound to a root-end of Rhunatha, allowing them to sense the planet’s condition as pulses, dreams, or symbolic visions. They do not commune with Rhun directly, but instead interpret the “mind-fire” of the tree.

Their forms reflect their origin—ashen, root-textured bodies with stone-set eyes that gleam like deep wells of stillness. They carry the presence of statues, ageless and unyielding, yet they are shape-adaptive, able to merge seamlessly with their surroundings, appearing as natural extensions of the land itself. To mortals, conflict is a struggle to be won; to the Rhunai, it is merely imbalance to be rewoven.

Ank Vahl is not a city in the mortal sense but a living sanctum woven into the vast root network of Rhunatha. Located on the southeastern isle of Rhuna, it sprawls across a land where roots the size of rivers pierce stone and soil, forming natural bridges, walls, and towers. Ank Vahl is half-organic, half-stone—a breathing metropolis where Balance itself becomes tangible.

The very ground of Ank Vahl trembles faintly with the rhythm of equilibrium, pulsing as if alive. Paths are not laid with stone but are formed from root-bridges, living structures that flex beneath the step yet never break. Among these foundations rise temples carved from ancient cocoons where Rhunai once slumbered, their walls shifting with runes that rearrange as the Balance of the world shifts.

Hanging gardens grow in perfect harmony, their plants never withering, never overrunning, their health a natural barometer of the planet’s stability. Pools of silver liquid, called the Celestial Wells, reflect not only the sky but also the Balance of time itself. Mortals who gaze too long into them risk their minds unraveling, but to the Rhunai, they are essential instruments of interpretation. Beneath the city lie the Silent Halls of the Ancients, caverns where the bodies of retired Rhunai rest in stillness. To mortals, they seem like statues, but the Rhunai know they wait—either for dissolution into the life-web or for reawakening in cycles yet to come.

Ank Vahl is a city of living symbols. Every garden, pool, and shifting rune reflects the current state of the cosmos, making the metropolis not merely a place of habitation, but an ever-changing mirror of the world’s Balance.

Erevalis – The Capital of Balance Copy link

At the center of Ank Vahl rises Erevalis, the capital of the Rhunai and the city most directly entwined with Rhunatha, the Great Tree of Balance. Erevalis is both heart and brain, a place where the Rhunai commune most deeply with the living consciousness of the planet itself.

Rhunatha towers above the city as a living nexus, its trunk pulsing faintly with veins of silver and gold that glow like neurons firing in a brain. The tree’s canopy stretches into the heavens, its leaves shifting color to reflect the state of Balance—glowing silver-green in harmony, darkening and cracking during times of great imbalance. Some branches stretch so far they brush into the Astral Plane, linking Rhunatha to cosmic currents beyond the Veil. Beneath the earth, its root network spreads across seas and mountains, allowing the Rhunai to perceive symbols of the planet’s health: a dying forest might appear as a withering eye, a corrupted Thread as a lattice of shattered glass.

The city of Erevalis itself spirals around Rhunatha’s trunk. The colossal Root-Spire rises as the central pillar, where platforms spiral upward along the bark, providing sanctuaries where the Rhunai conduct rites of weaving. Suspended bridges of living root connect towers carved into the trunk, creating the Celestial Canopy—high sanctums where the Rhunai merge their consciousness with the dream-flow of the Tree. The Chamber of Symmetry serves as a crystalline hall for meetings with mortals; its walls ripple like water, mirroring the Balance of the moment. At the city’s base, the Wells of Resonance glow with visions drawn from silver waters, consulted whenever great decisions loom. The Still Courts, vast silent halls, host rare councils between Rhunai, Zaltar emissaries, and mortal arbiters—though silence there is so absolute it seems to weigh upon the bones of all who enter.

To mortals, Erevalis feels suspended outside of time. Days blur together, voices echo strangely, and footsteps fall unnaturally soft, as though muted by equilibrium itself. The city inspires both serenity and dread, a constant reminder that Balance is eternal, impartial, and inescapable.

Roles of the Rhunai of Erevalis Copy link

The Rhunai of Erevalis are tasked with the highest duties of their kind. The Interpreters of Balance weave visions into prophecy, translating the pulses of Rhunatha into symbolic guidance. The Keepers of Root-End Rituals oversee the initiation of newly awakened Rhunai, ensuring they learn to interpret the Tree’s cryptic messages before leaving to fulfill their purpose. Guardians of the Forbidden act as wardens over sealed vaults that contain knowledge too dangerous for mortals—secrets of dethreading, records of lost balances, and prophecies of cosmic collapse. Above all are the Eternal Witnesses, ancient Rhunai who have endured since the early Lights. These silent statues rarely stir, but when they speak, it is because the Balance itself stands at the edge of unraveling.

How Mortals See Erevalis Copy link

Mortals perceive Erevalis with a mixture of awe, fear, and frustration. Scholars and Threaders come seeking wisdom but leave exasperated, for the Rhunai’s knowledge is always veiled in symbols. Nations like Corvia and Meridia keep their distance, wary of what Balance might demand of their ambitions. To the Uthuru and Daathru, Erevalis is an obstacle, a sanctum that denies their extremes.

For most mortals, Erevalis feels like a city where time breathes differently, a place where the very principle of Balance gazes back at them. It is unsettling, humbling, and unforgettable—an encounter not with a people or a place, but with the living truth of equilibrium itself.
