Lockfell — The Broken Hive Copy link

The Stacks upon the Bones Copy link

Lockfell was never built in one breath, nor by one people. It grew like a wound that never healed. When the Duranine port of Athendar fell into ruin during the Meridian Wars, refugees, scavengers, and exiles spilled inland, climbing the broken foundations of the Snapjaw cliffs. There, on the ribcage of Duranine stonework and Meridian wreckage, they began to lash together homes with driftwood, rope, and ruin. When space ran out, they built upward, stacking crooked homes on crumbling arches until the skyline sagged with the weight of desperation. Thus was born Lockfell, the city that devours itself, a hive piled on ruin, too stubborn to collapse and too cursed to rise clean again.

The Three Faces of Lockfell Copy link

Lockfell is not one city but three, each stacked upon the bones of the other:

• The Drown (Undercurrent) Flooded canals, collapsed catacombs, and seeping sewers. Here, the poorest and most desperate live ankle-deep in filth, trading moldy food and stolen air. It is a place where even light is for sale, and where corpses float until claimed for coin.

• The Gutter Veins (Midrow) The beating heart of Lockfell, where black markets choke crooked streets. Here are the taverns, the dens, and the warrens of daily survival. Every corner is a stall, every stall a gamble. Life here is loud, violent, and precarious—one fight away from ruin.

• The Perch (High-Society) Shacks built into the sky, stitched together with planks, rope, and the bones of ships. Here dwell the wealthy exiles, crime lords, and Keepers’ favored allies. Yet even their towers creak with rot and betrayal, for in Lockfell, even the rich live one blade away from the fall.

Each layer feeds upon the others. The Perch bleeds the Gutter for labor and coin. The Gutter bleeds the Drown for flesh and fuel. And the Drown waits patiently for the collapse, ready to drown all in rot and water.

The Rise of the Factions Copy link

Lockfell’s chaos demanded control, and in its alleys, four factions carved out domains that endure to this day:

• The Legionnaires, born from the Proving Dens, marched their order into the streets, enforcing brutal justice and making Lockfell’s law one of coin and combat.

• The Ghosts turned the narrow walls into ears, whispering power into knives and secrets. No deal in Lockfell passes without their shadow.

• The Trawlers dragged nets across Snapjaw Bay, hauling food, salvage, and sometimes Glimmer. They fed the hive even as they fed its hunger for risk.

• The Scions, orphan gangs who grew into smugglers’ guilds, painted Lockfell in blood and bright colors, turning rooftops into battlegrounds and alleys into arteries of contraband.

Together, these factions are both foundation and rot, each claiming to keep Lockfell alive even as they consume it.

The Market of Shadows Copy link

Lockfell’s greatest draw—and curse—is its unwatched market, where Glimmer, real or false, trades as easily as salted fish or stolen blades. Here, a coin might buy a future, a dagger, or a coffin, depending on who holds it. Counterfeiters thrive, prophets scream bargains, and desperate souls wager their last scraps of coin on a shard of fortune that may kill them by dawn. The market has burned a dozen times, but it always rises again—rebuilt by the very hands that destroyed it, for no one can imagine Lockfell without its hunger.

Collapse as a Way of Life Copy link

In Lockfell, collapse is constant. Fires sweep the Perch. Floods rot the Drown. Midrow markets implode into riots. Yet the city persists, not in spite of these collapses, but because of them. Every fall reshapes power, every death feeds another’s rise. To be born in Lockfell is to inherit a truth: survival is not security, but motion.

Lockfell in the Strand’s Story Copy link

If Athendar is the Strand’s throat, Lockfell is its lungs—choked, scarred, but still dragging in breath. It is where the majority of the Stranded live, where exiles trade scars and scars become coin. It is the proving ground of the forsaken, the hive that never empties, the city that cannot die because it has already died a thousand times.
