The Ink-Shadows

The Veloth are Astralkin whose existence began unintentionally within Vel’s consumption of Astravae, rather than through a divine decision to create them.

Unlike other Astralkin, they were not deliberately willed into mortal existence.

They broke free.

The Veloth are an unintended exception to deliberate Astralkin Materialization. As Vel consumed the Planes and compressed their power into the Seed-Stones, he also swallowed portions of Astravae, the Primordial Life-Web. Life formed chaotically within that consumption and erupted from his blackened heart in the deep chasms of Rhuna. This emergence was not an act of deliberate creation; whether Vel rejected that life or it broke free of him remains uncertain.

A scattered few survived.

They escaped into the deep chasms and broken places of Rhuna, too unstable to hold a lasting form without learning how to remain.

There, something extraordinary happened.

They learned how to remain.

Living void condensed into ink. Ink developed weight. Weight learned movement. Movement developed intention.

And eventually, those fragments learned the most difficult thing of all:

how not to dissolve.

This was the beginning of the Veloth.

Fragments That Survived Copy link

A Veloth is not Vel reborn.

They are not an incarnation through which Vel continues to act.

Nor are they servants carrying out some forgotten divine command.

Whatever relationship once connected these fragments to Vel was severed before the Veloth became themselves.

They are remnants of broken divinity that developed independent existence.

This makes their relationship with their Origin profoundly different from that of the Zaltar, Rhunai, or Karthine.

The Veloth did not begin with purpose.

They began with survival.

Their earliest existence was spent resisting dissolution long enough to become something capable of choosing what happened next.

For the Veloth, individuality is therefore more than identity.

It is an act of defiance.

Living Ink Copy link

Veloth bodies are not biological in the conventional mortal sense.

They are vaguely humanoid forms assembled through instinct and imitation.

Their bodies can resemble matte black stone, dried ink, or textured void. Their faces appear as shifting Rorschach-like masks, patterns moving across them like oil disturbed upon water.

Even the world around them sometimes seems uncertain how to accommodate their presence.

Light bends subtly.

Edges blur.

Their shadows can lag behind their bodies as though the darkness itself requires another moment to decide where they are.

Their humanoid appearance was not inherited.

It was learned.

Learning to Exist Copy link

Young Veloth begin unstable and imitative.

Before confidently approaching other peoples, many watch from concealment.

They observe posture.

Movement.

Language.

Clothing.

Gesture.

Behavior.

They learn what it means to possess a body by watching creatures who have never needed to question whether their bodies will remain intact.

Gradually, imitation becomes preference.

Preference becomes identity.

A Veloth chooses a name.

Their mask becomes increasingly recognizable.

Their form stops changing merely because something nearby has changed.

Traditionally, maturity is recognized when a Veloth can maintain a chosen name and consistent mask-pattern for an entire lunar cycle.

For most peoples, growing up means discovering who they are.

For a Veloth, it can mean proving that there is a who capable of remaining.

Unmoor Copy link

All Veloth possess an innate relationship with instability known as Unmoor.

Their presence can subtly loosen things that appear fixed.

Illusions weaken.

Rigid constructs become less certain.

Boundaries between forms and perceptions become easier to cross.

A Veloth does not necessarily destroy structure.

They reveal that structure is rarely as permanent as it appears.

This quality reflects their own existence.

The Veloth survived because something once thought inseparable from Vel became separate.

Something defined as part of another being became itself.

Every Veloth is therefore living evidence that a boundary can break—

and that what crosses it may become something new.

Chaos Without Servitude Copy link

The Veloth originate from Vel and therefore carry an intimate relationship with Chaos.

But Chaos is not allegiance.

And Chaos is not the Wither.

Veloth are explicitly not servants of Vel, and the surviving fragments from which they emerged no longer carry the loyalty once associated with their source.

Some Veloth seek structure.

Some pursue Balance.

Others embrace transformation and emotional intensity.

Their Origin gives them a relationship with Chaos.

It does not decide what they believe.

This distinction is fundamental to understanding the Veloth.

Not Veldraken Copy link

The Veloth are also distinct from the Veldraken.

The fragments that became Veloth were too small and too unformed to become Veldraken. Instead of continuing toward Wither, they developed self-sustaining identities of their own.

That separation remains culturally significant.

Veldraken can regard Veloth as fragments that betrayed entropy by refusing to dissolve into their expected purpose.

Veloth, meanwhile, demonstrate that originating from Vel does not require submission to everything Vel became.

Their existence rejects one of the most dangerous assumptions made about them:

Source is not destiny.

The Scars of Erevath Copy link

The first Veloth emerged throughout damaged regions of Erevath.

Some awakened among the Ash-Glass Reaches, where fractured ground breaks light like shattered mirrors.

Others emerged from the Silent Trenches, scars left behind by ancient clashes between Zaltar and Veldraken forces.

Still others appeared near the crystalline formations of the Slated Plains, where traces of Vel's influence remained after corruption had receded.

These were appropriate birthplaces for a people struggling to become whole.

Ruined towers became shelter.

Abandoned fortifications became homes.

Empty roads became places from which mortals could be observed safely.

The Veloth learned existence among things that had also survived being broken.

A Homeland Without Borders Copy link

The Veloth remain scattered.

They possess no singular homeland in the conventional sense.

Instead, their ancestral places are the liminal scars where Wither, Order, Chaos, and reality once collided.

The Ash-Glass Reaches.

The Silent Trenches.

The Slated Plains.

Forgotten ruins.

Collapsed Thread-sites.

Battlefields where reality never completely healed.

These places share a condition rather than a government.

They exist somewhere between what they once were and what they are becoming.

So do the Veloth.

Three Ways to Remain Copy link

As the Veloth learned to sustain themselves, three major expressions emerged from different circumstances of their formation:

Velmir — The Masked Echoes

Velnari — The Inkborn Wanderers

Velshakar — The Bound Remnants

They are not separate Origins.

All are Veloth.

What differs is how they learned to remain whole.

The Velmir found stability through Balance and emotional restraint.

The Velnari found stability through passion and transformation.

The Velshakar found stability through discipline and chosen constraint.

The Velmir Copy link

The Masked Echoes

The Velmir emerged within calmer folds of the Witherlands, where reality bent without completely shattering.

Their beginnings gave them greater internal cohesion than many other Veloth.

They tend toward patience, emotional perception, and restraint. Their masks shift slowly, often settling into comparatively symmetrical patterns.

The Velmir orient themselves toward Balance.

They listen.

Observe.

Mediate.

Rather than suppressing emotion, they seek to understand it without allowing it to dictate every action.

Their presence can even soften emotional extremes around them.

Among a people born from instability, the Velmir ask:

Can something remain flexible without falling apart?

The Quiet Watchers Copy link

Velmir commonly settle near borderlands, abandoned watchtowers, collapsed Thread-sites, and communities neighboring old Wither scars.

Many serve as mediators, scribes, envoys, negotiators, interpreters, and observers.

Their restraint can make them unsettling to peoples who mistake silence for secrecy.

But Velmir silence is often active.

They are listening.

Watching emotional movement.

Waiting to understand what exists beneath the words being spoken.

The Rhunai can respect this reflective quality, while Karthine sometimes recognize something familiar in the Velmir tendency to understand others through observation.

The Velnari Copy link

The Inkborn Wanderers

The Velnari emerged from far more violent circumstances.

They formed where Wither currents tore against reality through volatile rifts.

Where Velmir cohesion developed through relative calm, Velnari cohesion became emotional.

They learned to remain whole by feeling.

Strongly.

Completely.

Without apology.

Their masks can fracture into rapid patterns and pulses of color. Their movement can become unpredictable. Even nearby shadows may respond subtly to their emotional state.

Velnari do not necessarily seek stability.

They seek authenticity through change.

Transformation Copy link

Velnari are often drawn toward places where emotion runs hot.

Storms.

Festivals.

Battlegrounds.

Revolutions.

Celebrations.

Grief.

They seek experience because experience gives their existence something around which to cohere.

This makes them passionate, courageous, expressive, and sometimes volatile.

But their relationship with Chaos should not be mistaken for worship of destruction.

Velnari understand upheaval as an engine of transformation.

Something changes because the previous state can no longer hold.

Their challenge is learning how to experience transformation without allowing every emotional surge to tear them apart.

The Velshakar Copy link

The Bound Remnants

The Velshakar formed along brittle borders where Zaltar flame collided directly with Veldraken ruin.

They came dangerously close to becoming manifestations of Wither.

They survived by doing something seemingly contrary to their Chaotic Origin:

They imposed structure upon themselves.

Ritual.

Discipline.

Silence.

Repetition.

Constraint.

Through these practices, the Velshakar learned to contain instability rather than allowing it to consume them.

Their existence represents one of the clearest demonstrations that Origin does not determine allegiance.

Born from Chaos, they survive through chosen Order.

The Anchor Copy link

Velshakar maturity centers upon an act of deliberate self-binding.

A Velshakar chooses a single ritual object—a shard, blade, carved seal, stone, or similar anchor—and binds their continued cohesion to it.

This object becomes more than possession.

It is a declaration:

I choose this shape.

I choose to remain.

Some elder Velshakar eventually become known as Pillars, near-statuesque guardians capable of remaining motionless for decades before awakening when the places they protect are threatened.

To the Velshakar, constraint is not necessarily imprisonment.

Chosen constraint can be what makes freedom possible.

Identity Copy link

Veloth gender is naturally mutable.

Some stabilize into a chosen identity and remain there.

Others shift presentation gradually throughout their existence.

Different Veloth traditions approach this differently.

Velmir may maintain stable presentation for long periods to ease interaction with mortal communities.

Velnari often allow presentation to move alongside emotion or personal transformation.

Velshakar commonly choose a gender expression during stabilization and incorporate it into the identity they deliberately bind.

There is no contradiction in these traditions.

For the Veloth, identity is meaningful precisely because it can be chosen.

Agelessness and Dissolution Copy link

Veloth do not age as biological mortals do.

They can remain indefinitely so long as they maintain cohesion.

Their danger is not old age.

It is dissolution.

Identity and physical form are intertwined. If a Veloth's cohesion fractures beyond recovery, the individual can collapse back into inert ink-shadow.

Different Veloth traditions therefore develop different strategies for survival.

Velmir cultivate restraint.

Velnari learn to anchor themselves through purpose without denying emotion.

Velshakar bind themselves through structure and ritual.

All answer the same existential problem:

How do I remain myself?

Among Mortals Copy link

Veloth are rare, but they no longer exist only within forgotten ruins.

They walk among the peoples of Erevath.

Some conceal themselves as masked travelers.

Others make no attempt to hide what they are.

Their reception varies enormously.

Imari can appreciate their mutable forms.

Pahric scholars may regard them as living paradoxes.

Karthine can recognize something familiar in their reflective construction of identity.

Rhunai may find kinship with those Veloth who pursue Balance.

The Zaltar remain among the most suspicious, seeing in the Veloth fragments of the same divine force whose history brought catastrophe to Rhuna.

The Veloth cannot erase that history.

They can only demonstrate that they are capable of becoming something beyond it.

The Danger of Self-Definition Copy link

Freedom from predetermined purpose is powerful.

It can also become terrifying.

If nothing determines what a Veloth must become, then every choice carries unusual weight.

A Velmir can hide indefinitely behind restraint.

A Velnari can mistake emotional intensity for truth.

A Velshakar can become so dependent upon structure that the thing preserving them becomes another prison.

And any Veloth can become obsessed with proving that they are not Vel, not Wither, not corruption, not whatever someone else fears them to be.

Eventually, even rebellion against an identity can become another way of allowing that identity to control you.

The Veloth must learn something more difficult:

They do not need to spend eternity proving what they are not.

They must decide what they are.

The Ink-Shadows Copy link

The Veloth began as pieces of something else.

Fragments of Vel fell into the scars of Erevath and refused to disappear.

They learned shape through imitation.

Language through observation.

Identity through choice.

The Velmir found cohesion through Balance.

The Velnari found it through transformation.

The Velshakar found it through constraint.

None returned to being Vel.

None became what the world expected those fragments to become.

Instead, something that once belonged to a Deity became capable of saying:

I am not you.

For the Veloth, that may be the first and most important act of creation.

Vel gave them the fragment.

Survival gave them form.

Choice made them Veloth.
