The Moon-Forger Empaths

The Karthine are Astralkin born from fragments of Kar, the Lesser Deity of Reflection, willed into mortal existence beneath the frozen skies of Esamar.

They are mirrors given life.

A Karthine does not merely observe the world around them. Their nature responds to it. Emotion, behavior, movement, and ability can become reflected through them, allowing the Karthine to shape themselves through what they encounter.

Their defining gift is Copy: the ability to reflect and replicate qualities they witness, shaping themselves through observation and refinement.

This has made the Karthine extraordinary smiths, warriors, observers, and adaptors.

It has also created one of the central questions of Karthine existence:

When you can become a reflection of those around you, how do you know which parts are truly your own?

Fragments of Kar Copy link

Every Karthine carries within their Origin a fragment of Kar.

They are not descendants of Kar in the conventional mortal sense.

They are not incarnations of Kar.

They are individual mortal beings formed from fragments of the Deity of Reflection.

This distinction matters.

Reflection gives the Karthine their beginning.

It does not determine what they must reflect.

A Karthine can choose their companions.

Their loyalties.

Their disciplines.

Their principles.

Their surroundings.

And because the world around them can profoundly influence what they become, these choices carry unusual significance.

For the Karthine, environment is never merely background.

What surrounds the mirror eventually appears within it.

Reflection Copy link

Reflection is fundamental to Karthine existence.

But reflection is not simple imitation.

A mirror reveals something from another perspective.

A forge changes what enters it.

A reflection can expose details the original never noticed.

Karthine traditions therefore treat observation as something active rather than passive.

To watch is to learn.

To imitate is to understand.

To reproduce something is to discover how it functions.

The most skilled Karthine do not simply become copies of others.

They take what they encounter and determine what deserves to remain.

Es Dunera Neva Copy link

Karthine history carries the weight of Es Dunera Neva — the Betrayal Guilt.

Their traditions remember Kar's defiance of Zal during the creation years, and that ancient rupture continues to influence Karthine relationships with discipline, perfection, vigilance, and Order.

For many Karthine, the Guilt is not merely an ancient historical event.

It is inherited responsibility.

Something happened before their individual lives began, and generations afterward continue asking what obligation they possess toward it.

Some answer through service.

Some through perfection.

Some through atonement.

Some eventually question whether guilt inherited from a Deity should determine the lives of mortal fragments forever.

That disagreement has helped shape the divergent paths of the Karthine themselves.

Esamar Copy link

The frozen land of Esamar is the traditional heart of Karthine civilization.

Beneath its glacial auroras stands Karhuyl Dyne, where the Karthine are associated with the Star-Forges and the celestial traditions through which their people have shaped both metal and identity.

The cold is not merely an environmental obstacle.

It has shaped the rhythms of Karthine life.

Patience matters.

Preparation matters.

Materials behave differently.

A mistake made in a forge can destroy decades of work.

A mistake made beyond shelter can kill.

This environment has reinforced a culture in which precision and endurance carry considerable value.

The Star-Forges Copy link

The Star-Forges of Karhuyl Dyne stand among the defining institutions of northern Karthine culture.

Here the Karthine work Luniel, a celestial metal associated with the roots of the Northern Star-Pines and capable of absorbing and refracting divine energy.

Karthine forging is therefore more than manufacture.

It is refinement.

Material is observed.

Tested.

Tempered.

Changed.

The process reflects the Karthine themselves.

What enters the forge does not emerge unchanged.

Neither does the smith.

Forty Years at the Forge Copy link

Traditionally, a Karthine must craft their own arms and armor.

This is not accomplished quickly.

The process can take forty years, requiring the collection, tempering, and refinement of materials until the Karthine has produced something worthy of carrying beyond Esamar.

The importance of the tradition lies partly in what it demands.

Patience.

Failure.

Repetition.

Knowledge of material.

Knowledge of self.

A weapon forged over decades cannot easily be separated from the life spent making it.

By the time the work is finished, the Karthine has not merely created a weapon.

They have created evidence of who they became while making it.

The Mind Reforging Copy link

Before traditionally departing Esamar, Karthine undergo the Mind Reforging.

Thought is treated much as metal is.

Examined.

Heated.

Tested.

Tempered.

The rite exists because the Karthine understand the danger inherent in their own reflective nature.

Someone capable of absorbing so much from the world around them must possess some means of recognizing themselves within those reflections.

The Mind Reforging is therefore not simply a test of obedience.

At its most meaningful, it asks whether the Karthine has developed an internal structure capable of encountering the wider world without disappearing into it.

The Zaltar Counterpart Copy link

Traditional northern Karthine culture maintains a particularly close relationship with the Zaltar.

After leaving Esamar, a Karthine may be paired with a Zaltar counterpart, creating an anchor through which their shifting reflective nature can remain oriented toward Order.

The relationship reflects the ancient connection—and tension—between Kar and Zal.

To some Karthine, the counterpart is trusted companionship.

To others, mentorship.

Duty.

Tradition.

Or restraint.

The relationship is therefore not culturally uncomplicated.

An anchor can prevent someone from becoming lost.

It can also prevent them from discovering where they might have gone.

Eclipse Rituals Copy link

The Karthine traditionally observe Eclipse Rituals at dawn and dusk, reinforcing their connection with the cycles of light, shadow, Reflection, and Order.

These transitional moments are particularly meaningful to a people defined by reflection.

Dawn is not day.

Dusk is not night.

Both exist between conditions.

The light changes.

The world appears different.

Something familiar becomes briefly unfamiliar.

The Karthine live within that same tension.

They are shaped by what surrounds them while continually deciding what should remain when their surroundings change.

Three Reflections Copy link

Karthine culture has not remained singular.

Across Rhuna, three major expressions of Karthine identity have emerged.

Karthine remain centered upon Esamar, Karhuyl Dyne, the Star-Forges, and disciplined Reflection.

Karvryn traveled westward and became wandering smiths, memorysmiths, and keepers of memory among Meridian and Nuhlrin communities.

Karvekai severed themselves from traditional Karthine restraint, turning Reflection toward instability and transformation.

All three remain rooted in the same Astralkin Origin.

What differs is what they believe a mirror should do with what it sees.

The Northern Karthine Copy link

The Karthine of Esamar represent the most traditional expression of their people.

They value determination, strategy, discipline, precision, forging, and control over their reflective nature. Their lives center heavily upon the celestial traditions of Karhuyl Dyne and the long process through which young Karthine learn to stabilize themselves.

Their forms often carry silver or cobalt-blue skin, luminous sigils, pale starlit eyes, and frost-like patterns along their bodies.

Northern Karthine culture seeks to answer Reflection through refinement.

See.

Understand.

Temper.

Then decide what remains.

The Karvryn Copy link

The Moon's Echoes

The Karvryn are the western Karthine.

They left the isolation of Esamar and became increasingly intertwined with Meridian and Nuhlrin communities, establishing memory-forges and sanctuaries among settlements such as Vanthis and Irenfel.

Their interpretation of Reflection differs from their northern kin.

A Karvryn does not simply reproduce what they encounter.

They refine it.

Their Copy manifests through alteration and harmonization—taking what has been observed and shaping it into something capable of serving a new circumstance.

This makes the Karvryn particularly associated with craft, adaptation, reflection, and memory.

The Memory-Forges Copy link

A Karvryn memorysmith preserves a worked mirror and meaningful keepsakes in a community memory-forge.

Karvryn memory-forges bring their craft into the lives of the communities around them.

Here, reflection, engraved marks, and craftsmanship become methods of preserving memory.

Their memoryworks include worked mirrors, etched metal, memorial tools, and keepsakes shaped to preserve impressions of history, loss, and experience. Each object carries traces of the lives that have passed through it.

This gives the Karvryn a different relationship with history than their northern kin.

A Karthine may preserve perfection through disciplined craft.

A Karvryn preserves what would otherwise disappear.

A worked surface carries the marks of its making.

The maker may be gone.

But something of their choices can remain in what they leave behind.

For the Karvryn, memory works much the same way.

Mortal Entanglement Copy link

The Karvryn have deliberately involved themselves in the lives of mortal peoples.

This has made them valuable allies, artisans, mediators, and preservers of history.

It has also made them controversial.

Some northern Karthine regard them as lost—too entangled in mortal concerns and too far removed from Esamar's celestial traditions.

Some Zaltar question whether their interpretation of Reflection has drifted too far from Order.

The Karvryn continue regardless.

They do not need to rule the people among whom they live.

They listen.

Forge.

Remember.

And leave something behind that can survive after the people who made it are gone.

The Karvekai Copy link

The Shattered Reflections

The Karvekai represent the most radical departure from traditional Karthine life.

They have severed themselves from Kar's disciplined Reflection and rejected the restraints imposed by northern Karthine tradition.

Where the Karthine refine what they reflect and the Karvryn harmonize it, the Karvekai distort it.

Their reflective nature turns observed qualities toward instability, exaggeration, disruption, and transformation.

A strength can become frenzy.

A gift can become dangerous.

A stable form can become volatile.

To the Karvekai, this is not necessarily corruption.

It is freedom from the assumption that a reflection must remain faithful to its source.

Severance Copy link

The Karvekai reject the idea that Es Dunera Neva should bind them forever.

Where northern Karthine traditions respond to inherited guilt through discipline and atonement, the Karvekai regard severance as transformation.

The past happened.

They refuse to spend eternity apologizing for it.

This has led many into alliance with Veldrane, Uthuru warbands, rogue Threaders, and other forces opposed to established Order.

Some become raiders.

Some become destroyers.

Some embrace the Wither.

Some simply believe that no structure deserves permanence merely because it calls itself stable.

Their freedom can become liberation.

It can also become cruelty.

Reflection and Identity Copy link

Karthine identity can itself be reflective.

Their presentation may shift, and many eventually stabilize into a chosen form while others remain fluid throughout their existence.

This reflects a broader Karthine understanding:

Change does not necessarily mean that the previous self was false.

A reflection changes when the angle changes.

The object remains.

For some Karthine, identity becomes more stable with experience.

For others, transformation remains an authentic part of who they are.

Neither requires the Karthine to believe that only one version was ever real.

Immortality Copy link

Karthine are immortal by mortal standards.

They persist until choosing to return their energy to Kar's portals, although the different paths taken by Karthine can complicate that eventual return.

This changes their relationship with time.

A forty-year forging is not an entire career.

It can be preparation.

A relationship with a mortal community can encompass generations.

A disagreement begun centuries earlier may still involve people who remember its beginning.

Longevity gives the Karthine enormous opportunity to refine themselves.

It also gives them enormous opportunity to remain trapped within old reflections.

The Danger of Reflection Copy link

Reflection creates understanding.

It can also erase distinction.

A Karthine who constantly adapts to everyone around them may eventually struggle to recognize what they believe when nobody else is present.

A culture obsessed with refinement can mistake conformity for perfection.

A Karvryn can become so committed to preserving memory that the past prevents the present from changing.

A Karvekai can become so determined to reject inherited expectations that opposition itself becomes another form of bondage.

Every reflection carries the same danger:

Eventually, the mirror may mistake the image for itself.

The Karthine must learn the difference.

The Moon-Forger Empaths Copy link

The Karthine began as fragments of Kar, willed into individual existence through Reflection.

But Reflection produced more than one path.

The Karthine of Esamar temper what they witness through discipline and craft.

The Karvryn carry Reflection into the mortal world, preserving and refining memory through resonance.

The Karvekai break the mirror, distorting what they inherit in pursuit of transformation and freedom.

All three look upon the same world.

All three carry the same divine beginning.

What separates them is what happens next.

The mirror receives an image.

The Karthine decide what to make from it.
