The Shardlands of Kar
Esamar lies across the frozen north of Rhuna, a land of glaciers, dark mountains, crystalline forests, and open tundra beneath the light of Kar.
It is the homeland of the Karthine, the materialized people of Kar, and home to Karuhl Dyne, their great city.
Across Esamar, Kar is more than a presence in the sky. Fragments of it have fallen into the world for ages, transforming the landscape and providing the material foundation upon which much of Karthine civilization has developed.
The Kar-Shards Copy link
For millennia, fragments of Kar have fallen across Esamar.
Known as Kar-shards, these celestial fragments streak through the sky before striking glaciers, mountains, and tundra. Some are small enough to recover from an impact field. Others lie buried beneath entire landscapes.
Shardfalls can fracture ice, reshape stone, disturb the surrounding Threads, and alter the land for generations.
To the Karthine, Kar-shards are not simply celestial debris.
They are Kar made material within Rhuna.
Star-Trees Copy link
Where Kar-shards remain buried beneath the earth, Star-Trees may take root.
These great crystalline trees extend their roots toward the fragments below, drawing minerals through the surrounding soil and stone. Their pale trunks develop luminous veins, while their needles reflect the light of Kar above.
Over time, mineral deposits accumulate throughout their roots and surrounding earth.
The Karthine carefully maintain the oldest Star-Tree groves, both for their cultural importance and for the extraordinary materials that form around them.
A Star-Tree is not merely something growing above a Kar-shard.
It is part of the continuing relationship between Kar, Rhuna, and life.
Seventhar Copy link
Among Esamar's most valuable resources is Seventhar, the remarkable material produced through the relationship between Kar-shards, Star-Trees, and the land surrounding them.
Seventhar deposits form around the deepest roots of mature Star-Trees, where the material presence of Kar has been transformed through generations of growth, pressure, and exposure to the frozen earth.
In its raw state, Seventhar possesses qualities of both metal and crystal.
To the Karthine, it is something more specific:
Kar's reflection given material form.
Seventhar Steel Copy link
Karthine artisans have spent generations learning how to refine Seventhar.
Within the great Forges of Karuhl Dyne, raw material is subjected to carefully controlled heat, pressure, resonance, and specialized methods known primarily to Karthine craftspeople.
The resulting Seventhar Steel is exceptionally durable without becoming excessively heavy. Its reflective qualities remain visible after refinement, giving finished works a distinctive appearance of light beneath polished metal.
Seventhar Steel is used for exceptional weapons, armor, tools, mechanisms, and structural works.
It is never considered an ordinary construction material.
Seventhar Mesh Copy link
Some Seventhar is drawn into exceptionally fine strands rather than forged into rigid forms.
These strands can be woven into Seventhar Mesh, a flexible protective material capable of distributing force and heat across a wider surface.
The renowned Seventhar Cloaks are among the finest examples of this technique.
For the Karthine, Seventhar Mesh demonstrates an important principle of material craft:
Strength is not always resistance. Sometimes it is distribution.
The Shardlands Copy link
Repeated shardfall has transformed Esamar into a landscape unlike anywhere else in Rhuna.
Its regions are often defined by the ways Kar has entered the land and what has grown around those places.
The Shardgroves Copy link
The Shardgroves are great forests of Star-Trees growing above concentrations of buried Kar-shards.
Their luminous roots extend deep beneath the frozen ground while pale branches rise above the snow.
Karthine communities maintain many of these groves, monitoring the health of the trees, protecting Kar-shards beneath them, and carefully harvesting mature Seventhar deposits.
Some Shardgroves predate surviving Karthine records.
The Moonveil Glaciers Copy link
The Moonveil Glaciers contain countless fragments of Kar trapped within layers of ancient ice.
Shardlight refracts through the glaciers in silver, blue, and violet, causing entire valleys to glow beneath Kar.
Caverns beneath the ice contain mineral deposits, buried shards, abandoned structures, and passages revealed only as the glaciers shift.
The Karthine continually chart these changes.
A passage accessible today may disappear beneath the ice for generations.
The Falling Grounds Copy link
The Falling Grounds are broad expanses of tundra scarred by repeated shardfall.
Ancient craters overlap newer impacts. Kar-shards protrude from frozen earth while other fragments remain hidden beneath snow and stone.
Karthine surveyors regularly travel the region to record new falls and determine their effects upon nearby settlements, Star-Trees, and existing shardfields.
No map of the Falling Grounds remains accurate forever.
Kar continues to change them.
The Star-Pines of Northmere Copy link
Farther north stand the Star-Pines of Northmere, among the oldest known Star-Trees in Esamar.
These enormous trees have grown around ancient Kar-shards for generations, their roots extending deep beneath the frozen landscape.
Healthy Star-Pines are rarely harvested.
When one falls naturally, however, its timber, crystalline growths, and Seventhar deposits are carefully recovered. Northmere materials are particularly valued for Karthine works intended to withstand extreme conditions.
To destroy such a tree without necessity is considered an act of profound waste.
The Ice Vaults Copy link
Beneath portions of Esamar lie the Ice Vaults, chambers constructed to contain unstable Kar-shards, dangerous materials, failed works, and objects considered too unpredictable for ordinary storage.
Some Vaults remain actively maintained.
Others have been sealed for generations.
The Karthine do not assume that everything preserved by their ancestors should eventually be recovered.
Some things were buried for good reason.
Karuhl Dyne Copy link
The Forge of Reflections
Within the Dynecrag Mountains stands Karuhl Dyne, the cultural heart of the Karthine.
The city surrounds the greatest known Kar-shard to have fallen into Esamar, an immense silver formation embedded deep within the mountain.
The Karthine did not remove it.
They built around it.
Stone, ice, Star-Tree roots, Seventhar, and exposed surfaces of the great shard have been incorporated into Karuhl Dyne across generations.
The result is a city constructed around the material presence of Kar itself.
The Materialization Chambers Copy link
Within Karuhl Dyne stand the Materialization Chambers, where new Karthine are given physical form.
The process is overseen by a Summoner, who observes Kar, the resonance of the great shard, and the conditions necessary for Materialization.
Karthine are not born as mortal peoples are.
They materialize.
Each arrives as a new individual: Kar given physical expression within Rhuna, but possessing an identity and life entirely their own.
The Karthine describe this process simply:
Possibility becomes matter.
The Summoner Copy link
The Summoner holds one of Karuhl Dyne's oldest responsibilities.
They oversee Materialization and maintain the knowledge necessary for new Karthine to enter Rhuna.
Their role is not to determine what those Karthine will become.
Materialization provides form.
Life provides everything that follows.
The Forge-Vault Copy link
At the heart of Karuhl Dyne lies the Forge-Vault, the greatest center of Karthine material craft.
Here, Seventhar, stone, metal, crystal, Star-Tree material, and other substances are studied, refined, and transformed.
The Forge-Vault functions as workshop, archive, school, and laboratory.
Successful works are preserved.
Important failures are preserved as well.
A successful creation reveals what was possible.
A failed creation reveals what was misunderstood.
Both have value.
The Star-Forges Copy link
The Star-Forges are the specialized workshops in which Seventhar is refined and shaped.
Their artisans produce Seventhar Steel, Seventhar Mesh, weapons, armor, tools, mechanisms, and other works renowned throughout Rhuna.
The techniques required to work Seventhar are difficult and carefully taught.
This knowledge is guarded not simply because Seventhar is valuable, but because mishandling the material can be dangerous.
For the Karthine, expertise creates responsibility.
The Stillflame Dome Copy link
High within Karuhl Dyne stands the Stillflame Dome, an observatory devoted to Kar and the surrounding heavens.
Generations of Karthine astronomers have recorded lunar movement, eclipses, celestial disturbances, and shardfalls from within the Dome.
These observations also inform the Summoner and those responsible for monitoring conditions throughout Esamar.
Understanding Kar is both philosophy and practical necessity.
The Root-Cathedrals Copy link
Great Star-Tree roots penetrate portions of Karuhl Dyne.
Rather than sever them, the Karthine constructed chambers around them known as the Root-Cathedrals.
These spaces serve as places of contemplation, ceremony, study, and remembrance.
Some Karthine understand the roots as sacred connections between Kar and Rhuna.
Others study them as living expressions of Materialization.
The two understandings comfortably coexist.
The Refraction Spire Copy link
The Refraction Spire rises around an exposed portion of the great Kar-shard.
Its crystalline structure divides the light of Kar into radiant patterns that move across the surrounding city.
The Spire is closely associated with the Refractions of the Karthine—the different expressions through which the materialized people of Kar understand themselves.
Its lesson is simple:
One source may take many forms.
The Frostbridge Causeway Copy link
The immense Frostbridge Causeway spans the Dynechasm, connecting major portions of Karuhl Dyne.
Its construction has been repaired and expanded across generations, with each period deliberately visible within the next.
From the Causeway, travelers can see crystalline towers, Star-Tree roots, the fires of workshops carved into the mountain, and the silver presence of the great shard beneath the city.
It is Karuhl Dyne in miniature: new structures supported by everything that came before them.
The Memory Vaults Copy link
Deep beneath Karuhl Dyne are the Memory Vaults.
Here the Karthine preserve records, unstable fragments, dangerous relics, failed works, and objects whose significance is not yet understood.
The Karthine do not believe understanding must occur immediately.
Something that confounds one generation may become invaluable to another.
Preservation gives the future an opportunity to answer questions the present cannot.
Life in Esamar Copy link
Life in Esamar requires preparation.
Cold, distance, shifting ice, sudden storms, and sparse settlements make travel beyond established routes dangerous. Karthine communities maintain shelters, supply caches, marked passages, and records of changing conditions for those who travel after them.
This responsibility extends beyond immediate neighbors.
A shelter stocked today may save someone decades later.
A bridge repaired properly may survive its builders.
A Star-Tree tended carefully may provide Seventhar to generations that have not yet materialized.
For the Karthine, these are all expressions of the same responsibility.
Kar Made Material Copy link
Esamar reveals the nature of Kar more clearly than anywhere else in Rhuna.
Kar-shards are Kar materialized into the land.
Star-Trees are life transformed through contact with that materialization.
Seventhar is Kar's material presence transformed through the Star-Trees and the earth.
The Karthine are Kar materialized as people.
Karuhl Dyne stands at the center of these relationships—not as a monument to something distant in the heavens, but as a city built around something physically present.
Kar exists above Esamar.
Kar exists beneath it.
And the Karthine themselves walk between the two.
