A Hero's Origin Seed establishes the fundamental way their body ages, while their Origin Kind, Homeland, and culture influence when they are likely to leave home, take responsibility, or begin an adventurous life.
For most peoples of Rhuna, age is therefore not determined by culture alone. A Vathian raised among the Stranded remains Vathian in lifespan. An Astralkin who joins the Irenuk does not become mortal simply because they have abandoned their former society.
Astralkin Copy link
Astralkin are materialized through divine or cosmic forces rather than born through ordinary mortal lineage. Once fully formed, they experience little or no natural decline and may persist across extraordinary spans of time.
An Astralkin can still be destroyed, unmade, consumed by Wither, or otherwise killed. Their immortality is therefore agelessness rather than invulnerability.
Individual Astralkin cultures differ greatly in how long they remain sheltered, trained, or bound to their original purpose before venturing into the wider world.
Vathian Copy link
Vathians are mortal incarnations of the fractured Astraleth created through Xantyr's betrayal. Their individual bodies age and eventually die, but the divine fragment within them persists.
Through the Matra'kai cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, that fragment eventually returns to mortal existence as another individual.
A Vathian's lifespan varies considerably by Kind, but death does not reunite the fragment with the Astraleth from which it came. The cycle keeps the shattered divine essence separated across successive lives.
Nuhlrin Copy link
Nuhlrin possess fundamentally mortal lifespans. They are not sustained by Astralkin divinity, Vathian reincarnation, or the tangled inheritance of the Orvah.
Their longevity varies between peoples, environment, medicine, and circumstance, but most experience recognizable stages of childhood, adulthood, aging, and natural death.
What distinguishes Nuhlrin is not supernatural longevity but the enormous capacity of mortal lives to adapt, build, remember, and change.
Orvah Copy link
Orvah possess the least predictable aging among the four Origin Seeds.
The influence of the Valanark, their tangled inheritance, and the particular mixture of mortal, Threaded, and divine qualities expressed within an individual can dramatically affect development and longevity.
Some age much like long-lived mortals. Others remain vigorous for centuries. Physical changes associated with maturity may continue long after another people would consider adulthood complete.
For the Orvah, age is rarely a reliable measure of what someone has become.

THE UNBOUND & AGE Copy link
The Stranded, Irenuk, and Zhe do not possess unique biological lifespans. Their aging follows their Origin Seed and underlying Kind.
An Astralkin Stranded remains ageless. A Vathian Irenuk ages according to their Vathian Kind. A Nuhlrin Zhe possesses a mortal Nuhlrin lifespan. An Orvah raised among the Stranded retains the unpredictable longevity of the Orvah.
Unbound cultures can, however, influence when a Hero is considered ready to act independently.
Unbound Kind | Cultural Tendency |
|---|---|
Stranded | Responsibility often comes early; survival rarely waits for formal adulthood. |
Irenuk | Independence commonly begins once an individual can contribute safely to migration and tribal life. |
Zhe | Maturity is recognized through acceptance and functional independence within the host ecology rather than numerical age. |
