Conviction & Composure Copy link
Personality represents the internal and external qualities that shape how a Hero thinks, reacts, and holds to their beliefs. These traits influence emotional resilience, decision-making, social presence, and the ability to remain steadfast when challenged.
In mechanical terms, Personality determines a Hero’s Conviction and Composure.
Conviction represents inner resolve, certainty of belief, and resistance to manipulation, intimidation, temptation, and doubt. Composure represents outward control, confidence, and the ability to remain calm and collected under pressure.
Across Temperament, Inclination and Demeanor, choose at least one positive and one negative Trait. Together they give a Hero strengths to rely on and tensions that can shape difficult decisions.
A Hero’s Personality is defined through three aspects: Temperament, which represents emotional nature and ethical outlook; Inclination, which represents mindset and approach to problem-solving; and Demeanor, which represents outward presence and social bearing.
Positive Temperament and Inclination Traits contribute to Conviction, while Positive Demeanor Traits contribute to Composure. Some Negative Traits also provide Composure, representing qualities that may be socially difficult or morally questionable but still provide confidence, detachment, or emotional control. Other Negative Traits have no direct numerical value and instead create opportunities to earn Redraws when they meaningfully complicate the story.
TEMPERAMENT Copy link
Emotional Nature & Belief Copy link
Temperament reflects a Hero’s emotional nature, moral outlook, and personal beliefs. It describes how they instinctively frame the world, what they value, and how firmly they hold to those values when challenged.
Temperament most strongly influences emotional reactions, ethical framing, personal beliefs, and the strength of a Hero’s convictions. A compassionate Hero may interpret conflict through the suffering of others, while an ambitious Hero may see the same situation in terms of achievement, opportunity, or legacy. Neither determines exactly what the Hero must do, but each establishes a meaningful lens through which the character approaches the world.

Thought & Decision-Making Copy link
Inclination represents a Hero’s habits of thought, decision-making tendencies, and approach to challenges. Where Temperament describes what a Hero feels and believes, Inclination describes how they process information and decide what to do about it.
Inclination influences planning, impulse, tactical thinking, learning, adaptation, and decision-making under pressure. A cautious Hero may naturally look for danger before acting, while a reckless Hero may move before the situation can be fully understood. A strategic Hero may search for long-term advantage, while a shortsighted Hero may focus almost entirely on the immediate problem.
These Traits do not dictate a Hero’s choices. Instead, they provide a consistent pattern that helps define how the Hero approaches uncertainty and adversity.

Presence & Social Bearing Copy link
Demeanor represents a Hero’s external personality and social presence. It describes how they appear to others and how they carry themselves during conversation, negotiation, leadership, confrontation, and moments of stress.
Where Conviction reflects inner certainty, Demeanor reflects a Hero’s ability to control what others see. A Hero may be deeply uncertain yet appear calm and authoritative, or possess powerful convictions while struggling to express them with confidence.
Demeanor influences leadership presence, first impressions, social interactions, and visible reactions under pressure. It does not necessarily describe what a Hero truly feels. Instead, it describes how effectively the Hero maintains their chosen presentation when circumstances become difficult.

PERSONALITY FLAWS Copy link
Complications & Redraws Copy link
Not every Personality Trait provides Conviction or Composure. Some Negative Traits have a value of 0 and instead represent flaws, weaknesses, insecurities, poor habits, blind spots, or personal struggles.
These Traits do not simply make a Hero weaker. They create opportunities for characterization and introduce complications that can push the story in unexpected directions.
When a Hero roleplays a 0-value Personality Trait in a way that meaningfully complicates the story, creates a setback, increases tension, causes hesitation, introduces risk, or otherwise drives the narrative forward, the WorldKeeper may award the Hero 1 Redraw.
A Timid Hero might hesitate during an important confrontation, allowing an opponent to seize the initiative. A Reckless Hero might rush into danger before their companions are prepared. An Aimless Hero may struggle to commit when a decisive choice must be made, while an Oblivious Hero may fail to recognize an important social cue.
Similarly, a Fragile Hero might allow fear or stress to influence their decisions. An Anxious Hero could freeze when immediate action is required. A Meek Hero may fail to speak when their voice could change the outcome, while an Emotional Hero might allow anger, grief, affection, or fear to overwhelm careful judgment. A Passive Hero may simply allow events to unfold rather than intervening, even when intervention might have prevented the consequences that follow.
The complication must arise naturally from the Hero’s behavior and circumstances. Declaring a flaw without allowing it to meaningfully affect the Scene is not enough to earn a Redraw.
A Personality Trait may grant only 1 Redraw per Scene. The WorldKeeper is encouraged to reward flaws that create difficult choices, dramatic consequences, meaningful setbacks, or memorable character moments rather than flaws invoked only for mechanical benefit.
CONVICTION Copy link
Inner Resolve Copy link
Conviction measures a Hero’s inner resolve and certainty of belief. It represents the strength of the internal foundation that allows a Hero to remain true to themselves when confronted by outside pressure.
Conviction is used when resisting manipulation, intimidation, temptation, doubt, ideological pressure, or other attempts to undermine a Hero’s judgment or beliefs.
It is generated primarily through Temperament and Inclination, representing the combination of emotional strength and disciplined thought that allows a Hero to withstand uncertainty and influence. A Hero with strong Conviction may maintain their beliefs even when frightened, isolated, or confronted with compelling arguments. A Hero with weaker Conviction may be more susceptible to doubt or persuasion.
Conviction does not determine whether a Hero’s beliefs are correct. It determines how firmly those beliefs are held.
COMPOSURE Copy link
Outward Control Copy link
Composure measures a Hero’s ability to maintain outward control. It reflects confidence, emotional regulation, social presence, and the ability to remain collected while under pressure.
Composure becomes important when a Hero must conceal fear, maintain authority, withstand social pressure, remain calm during confrontation, or prevent internal uncertainty from becoming externally visible.
Unlike Conviction, Composure does not necessarily represent what a Hero truly believes or feels. A Hero with high Composure may appear completely calm while internally shaken. Likewise, a Hero with powerful Conviction may know exactly what they believe while still struggling to hide fear, frustration, anger, or uncertainty.
Composure is generated primarily through Demeanor, though certain Negative Temperament and Inclination Traits also provide Composure. These Traits represent qualities such as detachment, arrogance, cynicism, stubbornness, deception, or emotional distance that may be undesirable in some circumstances but nevertheless make a Hero more difficult to unsettle.
A Hero’s Conviction reflects what they believe.
A Hero’s Composure reflects how well they maintain control when those beliefs are challenged.
