Languages are more than a means of communication. They carry history, culture, tradition, and ways of understanding the world. The peoples of Erevath speak countless dialects and regional forms of speech, but most descend from a small number of broader linguistic traditions.
A Hero begins fluent in the language associated with their Origin Seed. Their Homeland, culture, and upbringing may determine the particular dialect, accent, script, or form of that language they use.
Dweller is the Common Tongue of Erevath. Unless there is a meaningful reason in their backstory that they would not know it, a Hero is assumed to have a working understanding of Dweller.
Regional and cultural dialects do not normally require separate Language training. A Corvian and Duranine, for example, may speak very different forms of Ren, but both are considered Ren speakers. These differences may still matter when interpreting unusual vocabulary, ancient writing, local expressions, or culturally specific forms of communication.
ANCESTRAL LANGUAGES Copy link
Origin Seed | Language | Description |
|---|---|---|
Astralkin | Alastrial | The broad ancestral language of the Astralkin. Individual Astralkin peoples preserve their own dialects, terminology, and forms of Alastrial. |
Vathian | Vathian | The shared linguistic tradition of the Vathian peoples. Gahlians, Pahric, Ezhani, Kalthir, and other Vathian cultures may speak markedly different regional forms. |
Nuhlrin | Ren | The widespread language family of the Nuhlrin. Ren has developed countless regional dialects as Nuhlrin peoples spread throughout Erevath. |
Orvah | Yru | The broad ancestral speech of the Orvah. Its final common name remains to be established. Orvah peoples may also rely heavily upon regional and nonverbal forms of communication. |

DWELLER — THE COMMON TONGUE Copy link
Dweller is the most widely shared language between the peoples of Erevath. Trade, travel, migration, and generations of contact have made it the practical Common Tongue throughout much of the world.
Heroes are generally assumed to understand Dweller unless their history provides a meaningful reason otherwise.
KANAR — THE WILDLANDS TONGUE Copy link
Kanar is the language of the Wildlands and the wild peoples who inhabit them. It is not bound to a single Origin Seed or culture. Peoples of very different ancestry may share Kanar through their relationship with the Wildlands.
Regional forms of Kanar can vary considerably, reflecting the creatures, environments, and traditions of those who speak it.
VELESK — THE WITHER TONGUE Copy link
Velesk, sometimes called the Dark Speech or Wither Tongue, exists outside the ordinary ancestral languages of Erevath.
Knowledge of Velesk is uncommon and should have a meaningful connection to a Hero's history, experiences, studies, or relationship with the Wither. It is not automatically granted by Origin.
DIALECTS & CULTURAL SPEECH Copy link
A language represents broad mutual understanding rather than identical speech.
A Hero may therefore describe their language culturally—Corvian Ren, Duranine Ren, Gahlian Vathian, or another regional form—without treating that dialect as an entirely separate Language.
The WorldKeeper may make these differences relevant when a Hero encounters particularly isolated speakers, archaic texts, specialized terminology, unfamiliar scripts, or culturally specific expressions.
Orvah speak Yru, the umbrella language shared across their regional dialects. Kanar is the Wildlands language and may be learned through a Hero’s life and cultural connections.
