DEVOTIONS Copy link
Not all power is drawn from the Threads.
Some power is granted through faith, conviction, purpose, and the enduring influence of forces greater than mortal understanding.
Devotions represent a Hero's connection to one of the Three Vigils: Life, Reflection, or Death. These are not merely philosophies or religions. They are fundamental truths woven into existence itself, shaping the cycles of growth, change, memory, and endings that govern all things.
A Devoted Hero does not command these forces. They serve them, embody them, and call upon them through acts of faith, ritual, conviction, and understanding.
Each Vigil offers a different perspective on the world.
Life nurtures growth, renewal, protection, and perseverance. Its Devotions preserve what exists, encourage what may become, and strengthen the bonds that sustain living things.
Reflection seeks balance, understanding, memory, and perspective. Its Devotions reveal hidden truths, moderate extremes, reconcile opposing forces, and illuminate the connections between past, present, and future.
Death governs endings, decay, sacrifice, and transformation. Its Devotions accept that all things must eventually pass, clearing the way for what follows and ensuring that nothing remains unchanged forever.
The Devotion Keywords presented in this chapter represent common expressions of each Vigil's influence. They are not fixed miracles or predetermined spells. Instead, they provide narrative and mechanical frameworks through which a Hero may channel the principles of their chosen Vigil.
A single Devotion may manifest differently depending upon the Hero, the circumstances, and the needs of the story. One devotee may invoke Life through healing and protection, while another expresses the same Vigil through resilience, growth, or restoration. The Vigil remains the same, even when its expression changes.
As Heroes deepen their connection to a Vigil, their actions become increasingly shaped by its principles. Their Devotions influence not only what they are capable of accomplishing, but how they view the world and the choices they make within it.
The Keywords that follow provide the foundation for those expressions.
Through them, Heroes do more than perform miracles.
They become living reflections of the Vigil they serve.
