Not every Hero needs to lead every challenge. Sometimes the most valuable contribution is helping another Hero succeed. Other times, the wisest choice is stepping back to recover before pressing forward again. Once per Scene, a Hero may choose to Support or Recover instead of performing a Check.
To do so, flip your Role Token and place it in the USED space on your board. A Hero may only choose one of these options per Scene.
SUPPORT Copy link
Support allows a Hero to assist another Hero's effort without making a Check of their own. When you Support, choose a Hero participating in the current challenge. That Hero gains either +1 Control or +1 Impulse to their Performance. The supporting Hero chooses which bonus to provide.
You are considered to be actively contributing to the action and count as one contributing Hero for any effects that care about participation, including Prepare Escalation. Support should always be reflected in the fiction. You are not simply granting a bonus—you are helping.
This might mean holding a rope while another Hero climbs, providing directions during exploration, covering an ally during combat, assisting with tools, supplies, or observations, offering encouragement during a difficult negotiation, or helping stabilize a Threadcraft, Ritual, or Project.
Supporting allows a Hero to contribute meaningfully without risking Wear, Impact, or other consequences associated with making a Check.RECOVER
Recover allows a Hero to pause, regroup, and regain strength. When you Recover, draw two tokens from your bag. For each pip drawn, recover one Fatigue. Ignore all other token effects.
Recovering represents catching your breath, gathering your thoughts, tending minor injuries, restoring composure, or preparing yourself for the challenges ahead. This might mean resting after a difficult climb, centering yourself after a frightening encounter, adjusting equipment and supplies, tending bruises and scrapes, or taking a moment to focus before continuing.
Recover does not advance the current challenge, but it helps ensure the Hero is prepared for future ones.

After choosing Support or Recover, place your Role Token in the USED space. A Role Token in the USED space cannot be used again until the next Scene.
At the beginning of a new Scene, return all Role Tokens from the USED space to their normal position.
CHOOSING SUPPORT OR RECOVER Copy link
Support is often the best choice when another Hero is better suited to the challenge, when the group needs additional contributors, or when assisting an ally would be more valuable than acting independently. Recover is often the best choice when Fatigue is beginning to accumulate, when a Hero needs time to regroup, or when they are not well-positioned to contribute to the current situation.
Both choices represent meaningful participation in the story. Even when a Hero is not taking center stage, they continue to influence the outcome of the adventure.
